Will Digital Media Players Replace the DVD?

By Jonathan Rankburn

It is generally accepted, that no one medium is going to last forever. Now I know those of you who held on to your eight track tapes, and your laser disks, were hoping for the best, but I know things just did not pan out. VHS tapes were a great addition, extremely expensive at first, but eventually came down in price. CDs came along, and then the invention of the DVD that could hold more information, and use less space. Now BluRay has come on to the scene as a new format that can hold more data, and use multiple lasers. So what's next? What will the new next thing be? My answer to you, is the digital media streamer.

So what exactly is an HD digital media player? A digital media player, otherwise known as a digital media streamer, is a consumer electronic device that allows you to store, or stream your entire digital media collection from a computer source, or a computer network. Some devices output video in up to 1080P, and they output digital audio in up to 7.1 channels. They stream this all directly to your high-definition television and home theater system.

While some media streamers must be hardwired to a computer network in order to stream high-definition digital media, some digital media players give the user the ability to install a hard disk drive internally. This allows you to store your media directly on the device and take it with you anywhere you want to go. There are also wireless adapters available that allow you to wirelessly stream your media. However you decide to connect, you will be able to stream your digital media like movies, music, and photos directly to your high-definition television in your living room.

As an example, the Xtreamer media player is one of the newest digital media players to hit the market. It offers state-of-the-art capabilities allowing you to not only stream your digital media like movies, music, and photos directly to your living room, but to any living room anywhere in the world as long as you have a connection to the Internet.

Also the Xtreamer gives you the ability to control your media and program your Xtreamer with your iPhone. The Xtreamer is not a wireless streamer from the manufacturer, but they do offer a wireless adapter at a small additional fee.
